Pre-Conceptual Counseling

Doctor Nurse and Pregnant Woman

Dr. Ross J. Valone, your Des Moines ObGyn, counsels women to ensure that they are in the best possible health before they get pregnant or start in-vitro fertilization procedures.  No matter what your specific needs are, we help our patients embrace their pregnancy and childbirth.  We know that the key to delivering a healthy baby is keeping the mother healthy.

Preconception Care

Preconception care is offered by your Des Moines ObGyn to minimize complications for both the mother and her baby.   It is often prescribed for women being treated for any condition that may result in a high-risk pregnancy.  Some of these conditions include:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Sickle cell anemia.

Preconception care is also offered to women seeking counseling not because of existing conditions but in order to be well prepared for pregnancy and childbirth.

The Steps to Ensuring Total Wellness

The first step your Des Moines ObGyn will take in your preconception care is to perform a complete health screening. This screening may take several visits, but the benefits you and your child will gain are numerous.

In addition to a complete medical history, Pap smear and cholesterol and diabetes screening, we’ll also review your family’s health history with you and conduct HIV and STD screening.  We’ll also screen for use of alcohol, drugs and over-the-counter medications.

After he has completed your checkup and health assessment, Dr. Valone, your Des Moines gynecologist, will work with you to establish a set of goals for a healthy pregnancy, including your nutritional and medical needs.

Your Des Moines Gynecologist will provide extra counseling to any woman who has been identified as having a condition that may impact a healthy pregnancy.  This can include a history of miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth.

We want to be your gynecologist in Des Moines; if you are considering getting pregnant and are interested in pre-conceptual counseling, call our office today at (515) 225-7201 to set up an appointment or to talk to any of our highly qualified staff members. We look forward to serving you.
