Urinary Incontinence and Prolapse Evaluation

Urinary incontinence is the accidental release of urine that can occur when you cough, laugh, sneeze, or just can’t get to the bathroom in time.  While your Des Moines urologist finds that it is very common among older adults, urinary incontinence typically doesn’t create major health problems.

There are two types of urinary incontinence – stress incontinence and urge incontinence – and some women actually suffer from both types.

The most common bladder control problem your urologist in Des Moines sees is stress incontinence, which occurs when you sneeze, laugh, jog or do anything else that results in pressure on your bladder.  With stress incontinence, there will be a small to medium amount of urine being discharged.

When you experience a strong or frequent need to urinate – even if your bladder only contains a small amount urine – but you can’t reach the toilet in time, this is known as urge incontinence.  This type of bladder control problem results in a larger amount of urine being released.

How is urinary incontinence treated?

Treatment of urinary incontinence is different for each patient.  After Dr. Valone – your Urologist in Des Moines – determines which type of urinary incontinence you are experiencing, he will prescribe treatment that may include:

  • Exercises;
  • Bladder training;
  • Medicines;
  • Surgery;
  • A combination of the above.

Uterine Prolapse Evaluation

When you visit your Urologist in Des Moines, Iowa, Dr. Valone will confirm the presence of uterine prolapse by first reviewing your medical history and conducting a physical/pelvic exam.

Symptoms vary from pelvic pressure and discomfort to backache, which may be accompanied by frequent urination.  If symptoms develop that require surgery, a vaginal hysterectomy may be performed.
