Genetic Testing (Pre-Pregnancy & Cancer Screening)

Dr. Valone, your Des Moines ObGyn, will perform prenatal testing to determine if any problems exist that may endanger you or your unborn child.   As an expectant parent, it’s important to educate yourself about these issues and what you can do if a problem is detected.

Genetic testing has developed to the point where you ObGyn in Des Moines can often pinpoint defective or missing genes.

The type of testing is determined by a number of factors, such as:

  • Symptoms of a disease caused by genetic alterations (diagnostic testing);
  • Family history of a genetic condition (presymptomatic and predictive testing);
  • Family history of a genetic disorder such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia (carrier testing);
  • Existence of a particular health disease or condition (pharmacognetics testing);
  • Abnormalities in the genes of your fetus (newborn screening).

Your gynecologist in Des Moines will collect a blood sample, skin sample, amniotic fluid sample and/or other tissue such as that from the placenta and forward the sample to the lab for a complete analysis.  In some cases he may collect a swab sample from the inside of your cheek.

There are, however, some limits to genetic testing.  The tests may help your Des Moines Ob-Gyn identify a particular problem gene, but not indicate how severely that gene will affect the person carrying it.  Also, many illnesses develop from a mix of environmental factors and high-risk genes.  Identifying the existence of these genes, however, provide you with the opportunity to modify your lifestyle and avoid illness.

Research is ongoing, and genes that put people at risk for cancer, heart disease and other medical issues are constantly being identified.
